New York City–– Marking Election Day, Voice for Refuge Action Fund today launched a new set of resources for former refugees interested in running for office and representing their communities, including a 10-page quick start guide on running for office. Along with the release of new resources, Voice for Refuge will join New American Leaders Action Fund in hosting a virtual panel event Wednesday, November 3 at 7:00 pm (EST) featuring Trustee Khemarey Khoeul (IL), Commissioner Nafisa Fai (OR), Representative Tram Nguyen (MA), Ms. Clara Hart (SD), and Representative Vanna Howard (MA).
Tomorrow’s event will feature former refugees who have run for office, sharing their experiences including challenges they overcame and advice for other former refugees who are interested in pursuing public office. Registration information for the panel can be found at www.bit.ly/refugeepanel.
Under U.S. law, individuals with refugee status are eligible for U.S. citizenship after 5 years of residency, at which time they are also eligible to vote and run for elected office. Refugee representation in city, state, and federal offices is incredibly low however, representing a small portion of the actual size of refugee communities present in the United States. Voice for Refuge Action Fund seeks to inspire and equip refugee leaders to run for office in 2022 starting with the launch of new resources.
About Voice for Refuge: Voice for Refuge is the first 501(c)4 organization created to advance pro-refugee policies at the national, state, and local level and to hold elected leaders accountable to upholding America’s legacy of welcome. Voice for Refuge is educating the public about the benefits of refugee resettlement, advocating for pro-refugee policies in the U.S. Congress and state legislatures, and increasing civic engagement among refugees through non-partisan voter education. Voice for Refuge will also promote the representation of refugees in government by supporting former refugees and pro-refugee candidates running for office at the national, state, and local level.
